Introduction
The half-lights of Debussy's miraculous score glow richly and evocatively for Herbert von Karajan. Frederica von Stade and Richard Stilwell take the title roles, while José Van Dam compels as the tragic Golaud.
Synopsis
Debussy’s only completed opera, first performed in 1902, is a subtle, enigmatic work, based closely on the play by the Symbolist poet and dramatist Maurice Maeterlinck. The iridescent beauty of its orchestral writing, with its distillation of Wagnerian techniques, complements the clarity and truth of word-setting which closely follows the patterns of spoken French.
The opera begins with the widower Golaud lost in a forest where he finds the mysterious, golden-haired Mélisande. He takes her home as his wife to his gloomy castle, the home of his grandfather, mother, young son and half-brother Pelléas. In a series of ambiguous and often inconclusive scenes we are witness to a growing intimacy between Pelléas and Mélisande and to Golaud’s festering doubts and jealousy. By the time Pelléas and Mélisande declare their love to each other, Golaud is at the point of no return. He ambushes them and kills Pelléas. In the opera’s final scene, Mélisande has given birth to a daughter, but is now mortally ill. Full of regrets, Golaud tries to discover the truth of her love for Pelléas, but, unable or reluctant to provide him with a conclusive answer, she dies.
