Introduction
Cervantes' nobly deluded knight, in Massenet's gentle take on the classic story, finds an ideal interpreter in the ever-eloquent José van Dam. As Dulcine Teresa Berganza glows with authentically Hispanic sensuality, while Alain Fondary makes a sterling Sancho Panza.
Synopsis
The title role of Don Quichotte was composed for the legendary Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin. Premiered in 1910 and Massenet’s last major success, this subtle, sometimes sentimental opera was based on a play by Jacques Le Lorrain, inspired by Cervantes’ monumental novel Don Quixote.
In Cervantes the lady Dulcinea is a figment of Don Quixote’s imagination, but here, as Dulcinée, she becomes the living, alluring object of his wistful serenade at the end of Act 1, 'Quand apparaissent les étoiles'. She sends him on a quest to retrieve a pearl necklace, stolen by bandits. En route to the bandits’ camp, Sancho Panza, Quichotte’s stalwart squire, bemoans the caprices of women before the knight intrepidly attacks a windmill to witty music worthy of Offenbach. Arriving in the mountains, Don Quichotte is ambushed by the bandits, but his noble prayer 'Seigneur, reçois mon âme’ touches the bandit chief and he leaves with Dulcinée’s necklace. Returning to her in triumph, he asks her to marry him. She declines, and when her friends mock the knight, Sancho Panza defends him staunchly. In the touching final scene, Don Quichotte is near death; looking up at the starry sky and hearing the voice Dulcinée, he dies in Sancho Panza’s arms.
