Introduction
It took many years for Plácido Domingo to assume the monumental role of Tristan, but this recording was well worth the wait, with the incandescent Isolde of Nina Stemme, the noble King Marke of Rene Pape, and a superb supporting cast under Antonio Pappano.
Synopsis
Tristan und Isolde changed the history of music. In this work, first heard in Munich in 1865, Wagner took a Celtic myth and overlaid it with the philosophy of Schopenhauer and one of the most revolutionary scores ever written, building a massive three-act structure in which the yearning harmonic tensions of the prelude only reach their true resolution in Isolde’s transcendental ‘Liebestod’ (love-death), sung over Tristan’s corpse.
The opera begins on a ship. The Cornish knight, Tristan, is escorting the Irish princess, Isolde, who is to marry King Marke of Cornwall. There is violent antagonism between Tristan and Isolde -- before the action of the opera he had killed her lover – yet also a tortured complicity. Isolde, whose searing Narration and Curse is a highpoint of Act 1, commands her companion, Brangäne, to prepare poison so that she and Tristan can put an end to their misery, but Brangäne substitutes a love potion. In Act II, set in Cornwall, the lovers express their limitless passion in an extended and elevated nocturnal duet, but, after they are betrayed to King Marke, violence ensues and Tristan is wounded. Much of Act III consists of Tristan’s agony before he and Isolde are united in death.
